), eighteenth letter in the Etruscan abecedaria (IG14.2420) and probably in the oldest Gr. alphabets, occupying the same serial position as the Hebrew Tsade (<*>, Phoenician <*> <*> Syria 6.103), with which it may be identified. In many of the oldest Gr. alphabets it represents the sound s, for which <*> and <*> (twenty-first letter in the Etruscan abecedaria) is an alternative representation preferred in other Gr. alphabets. It is uncertain whether the letter <*> (name and serial position unknown), which represents the sound σς in Schwyzer 707 (Ephesus, vi B.C.), 701A17 (Erythrae, v B.C.), SIG4.6 (Cyzicus, vi B.C.), 45.2, al. (Halic., v B.C. ) and the third sound (σς ?) in the name of Mesambria in BMus.Cat.Coins Thrace p.132, is to be identified with [full] Μ.

0-0It is also uncertain whether the numerical symbol <*> (= 900), described by Gal.17(1).525, which has this form in PEleph.1 (iv B.C.), PCair.Zen.22.5 (iii B.C.), Rev.Phil.35.138 (Thessaly, iii B.C.), Milet.6.39 (ii B.C.), where it forms part of a symbol for thousands, and later the forms [full] Τ JHS26.287 (Athenian tesserae of iv B.C.), 25.342 (papyri of ii B.C.), SIG695.83 (Magn. Mae., ii B.C.), IG12(1).913 (Rhodes, i B.C.), <*> ib.22.2776.11, al. (ii A.D.), and <*> (medieval Mss., called παρακύϊσμα in Sch.D.T. p.496 H.), is to be identified with either of the foregoing. The numerical symbol, in the form <*>, follows ω in an Attic abecedarium, Bullettino dell' Inst. di corrisp. archeol. 1867.75, and that position tallies with its numerical value, since ω = 800. The extended alphabet used by Archim.Spir.11, Aequil.2.3 for a diagram ends with ω <*>.

Etymology: As instrument noun σκάνδαλον indicated prob. a suspended or free hanging down (piece of) wood (cf. πέτευρον, ῥόπτρον), from where developed in concreto both `loosenings, instrument (Germ. Stellholz) in an animal-trap' as `acrobat-bar' (from where σκανδαλιστής). From this σκανδάλ-ηθρον (on the formation Chantraine Form. 373 f.), prob. prop. of the trap (Germ. "Stellholzgerät") itself (thus most prob. in Ar.), but in use identified with σκάνδαλον, which referred to the trap (cf. Swed. giller `Stellholz, and the trap with it'). -- Of old (Pott, Bopp; s. Curtius 166) as IE connected with Lat. scandō `mount', Skt. skándati `jump, hop, hurry', MIr. perf. se-scaind `he jumped'; orig. meaning so `apparatus going off' (Osthoff Etym. parerga 1, 355 f.)? -- WP. 2, 540f., W.-Hofmann s. scandō; on σκάνδαλον further Bauer Gr.-dt. Wb. s. v. w. lit. (esp. G. Stählin Skandalon, Gütersloh 1930). -- The forms adduced seem to point to an IE word (* skend-, skond-), but the a-vocalism rather points to a Pre-Greek word; as does the meaning (technical instr., used by acrobats; cf. on κυβιστάω).

Etymology: As old yot-present σκέπτομαι stands with metathesis (Schwyzer 268) for *σπέκ-ι̯ομαι, which is identical with Lat. speciō, Av. spasyeiti and (except for anl. s-) with Skt. páśyati `see'. The aor. σκέψασθαι too can in the same way be identified with Lat. spexī ; in both cases we have however to do with innovations against the suppletive Skt. ádarśam, 3. pl. ádr̥śan (s. δέρκομαι). Through the iterative-intensive σκοπέω, - έομαι a new opposition was created in Greek to σκέψασθαι etc. in the same way as Skt. pásyati: ádarśam, ὁράω: εἶδον. -- Semant. and phonetic identity is also found in σκοπός and Skt. spaśa- `spy', which is enlarged from spaś- (s. below; Wackernagel-Debrunner II: 2, 90); to this further OWNo. spār `predicting' from PGm. * spaha- (IE *spóḱo-). Etymology: As agricultural term for sowing σπείρω belongs exclusively to Greek. In the west, including Balto-Slavic, appear for it representatives of sē-: sh₁- (Lat. sēmen etc.); s. Ernout-Meillet and W.-Hofmann s. 1. serō (cf. also above on ἵημι). Also in the supposedly older meaning `strew' the other languages provide nothing, that can be identified with σπείρω. Nearest cognate Armenian has in sp'iṙ `strews' with sp`r̄em `spread out' and in p`arat `spread out, separated' with p`aratem `spread out, remove' words which, not to speak of the "rolling" r̄ and the vowel (IE ē or i) in sp`iṙ, in anlaut (IE ( s)ph-?) differ from σπείρω. Arm. spar̄nam `threaten' (Meillet BSL 31, 52) differs semantically strongly. The last word leads to the s. σπαίρω adduced Skt. sphuráti, Lat. spernō etc. Thus we retain two IE groups sp(h)er- with the general meaning `strew, sprinkle, spatter' resp. `draw out, kick with the foot, sprawl, (Gm.) hurry', which, cannot well be distinguished and as popular-expressive expressions may have formed the starting point for σπείρω". Cf. the lit. on σπαίρω. -- Hitt. išpar-iya-zi (beside išpar-i) `he folds out, stretches out', wit σπείρω formally comparable, gives some doubts (Benveniste BSL 33, 139).

With the reserve necessary with PN Πλάταια can be identified with Skt. pr̥thivī́ f. `earth', prop. "the broad (stretches of earth); here also a Celtic agreement e.g. in Welsh.-Lat. Thus στόνος = Russ. stón `groan, moan', Skt. abhiṣṭaná- `roaring thunder'; perh old parallel formations. Besides yotpresents: with full grade OCS. stenjǫ `στένω', with zero grade OE stunian, OWNo. stynja `id.' Athemat. ipf. Skt. stan (IE * sten-t); to this ipv. stanihi after anihi, rudihi a.o. As before the ῥ- a consonant must have disappeared, an original PGr. *Ϝρά̄χ-ι̯ω (cf. ῥαχ-ία) can be identified with a Slavic verb for `beat' (also with loss of u̯-), e.g. Russ. razítь, Czech. raziti, to which a.o. Czech. ráz `stroke, stamp', Russ. raz `turn', IE *u̯rāǵ(h)- (WP. 1, 318f. with Lidén Ein balt.-slav. Anlautges. 24 f.). The Slav. words, however, have also been connected with Russ. rézatь `cut, slaughter', OCS rězati ' κόπτειν' etc. and so with ῥήγνυμι (s. Vasmer s. raz II and Fraenkel s. rė́zti 1), which however clearly semant. slightly deviate. (As in Greek ῥήσσω and ῥήγνυμι, so in Slav. the corresponding verbs may have partly coalesced. -- The attractive connection with ἀράσσω (Bechtel Lex. s. ῥήσσω with Joh. Buck IF 25, 259 [after ἵστημι] and Solmsen l. c. [unaccented ἱ-]), presupposes a noun ἑστο-, -ᾱ v. t.. - For the etymology the question of the anlaut is decisive. Against the evidence for anlaut. Ϝ-, Ϝιστιαυ (PN, Mantineia IV^a), γιστία ἐσχάρη (cod. - τη) H., which are doubted, there are dialect forms, where expected F fails; s. Solmsen Unt. 213ff. Therefore the old, still defended equation with Lat. Vesta is uncertain. See e.g. W.-Hofmann s. vesper. - This difficult puzzle has recently been solved. Armenian had *e which became ei \> i before š, ž. The š can go back to - k(ʷ)s- (cf. vec` \< *u̯eks beside veš-tasan); s. Beekes, FS Rasmussen 2004, 59-62. Combined with the -k- and - sp- reconstructed for the other languages (above), this gives a group - k(ʷ)sp-. This group has been identified with Skt. kṣap- `night', of which the zero grade has been found in Hitt. i-spant- `night'. Welsh ucher can continue *u̯e followed by ks(p) or sp. The first element is probably cognate with Lat. uē- as in uē-sanus. The meaning will have been `(what stretches) to(wards) the night'. Etymology: θύ̄νω has been analysed as *θύ-νϜ-ω (with ἐθύνεον \< *ἐ-θύ-νεϜ-ον), an old νῡ-present and identified with Skt. dhū̆-nó-ti `schütteln' (Schwyzer 696 a. n. 2). But I don't see what `schütteln' has to do with our verb. - For θυστάδες, θύσθλα one posited a stem θυσ-, which has also been posited for θυίω, if from *θύσ-ι̯ω (Schulze Q. 313 n. 5, Fraenkel Nom. ag. 2, 37; diff. J. Schmidt KZ 27, 294f.; s. also Schwyzer 686 ε). It is however not certain that this supposed *θυσ- has anything to do with our verb. This *θυσ- has been connected with Lat. fur-ō, - ere, s. W.-Hofmann s. v., where also other interpretations are given; we can therefore better leave furō on itself. See also 2. θύω. - The hesitation between θύω 1 and θύω 2 shows how uncertain the interpretation is. I wonder whether *θυσ- is not of foreign origin. Note rare forms or meanings as θύστα, θυτάδες, θυάω. Pok. 261ff. gives anenormous amount of forms and meanings, but no close parallel for the meaning of θύω 1. In the present situation, without further research, nothing can be said.

Origin: IE [Indo-European] [923f.] * skel(H)- `cut, split'

Etymology: As zero grade yot-present σκάλλω can be formally identified with Lith. skiliù, inf. skìlti `strike fire': IE *skl̥-i̯ō [but the accent shows that the root is disyllabic; s. bel.]. Semantically closer are the innovated nasalpresents skįlù (skylù) `split off, get a tear' and the full grade skeliù, skélti `split', also `strike fire (ùgnį) (from a stone)', the last of which is also found in Germ., e.g. ONord. skilja `separate, distinguish'. Diff. again MLG schelen `id.' (PGm. * skelōn; type Lat. secāre), Arm. c'elum `split' (u-pesent; anlaut unclear), Hitt. iškallāi- `split, tear apart' (formation uncertain; s. Kronasser Etymologie $ 200 f., 214). -- The Greek derivv. go all back on ungeminated σκαλ-, which must not be old, but may have originated after σφαλ- (: σφάλλω), θαλ- (: θ άλλω) etc. Sophie Minon ( RPh. LXXIV 282) reconstructs *skl̥h₁-ye\/o-, assuming that the laryngeal disappeared in this position, after Pinault 1982, 265-272; cf. LIV 500. On σκαλαθύρω s.v. -- To the same formal system, but independent of σκάλλω, belong also σκαλμός `thole', σκῶλος, σκόλοψ etc.; s. vv. A clear separation from the semant. cognate κολάπτω, κόλος, κλάω, κελεός etc. cannot be achieved; [not here σκύλλω]. -- The non-Greek formations are innumerable; on this WP. 2, 590ff., Pok. 923ff. w. rich lit.

Meaning: `the upper fleshy part of the shank, shank' (Il.; on the meaning cf. the discussion by Meuli Phyllobolia [Festschr. v. d. Mühll 1946] 215ff.; to this Frisk in AmJPh 71, 89f.).

Compounds: Few compp. like μηρο-τραφής `with fleshy schanks' (Str., AP), σύμ-μηρος `with the thights closed' (Hp.).

Derivatives: μηρία n. pl. (- ίον sg. Posidon.) `thigh-bones' (Il.); μηρ-ιαῖος `belonging to the shanks' (X.; like νωτ-ιαῖος etc., Chantraine Form. 49); μηρίζω `strike on the thigh' (D. L.; after γαστρίζω), but δια-μηρίζω `hold the thighs separated' with - ισμός (Ar., Zeno), also κατα- μηρός `id.' (Suid.).

Etymology: The old collective plur. μῆρα (Schwyzer 581, Schw.-Debrunner 37) can be identified with Lat. membra n. pl. `bodyparts' (Bezzenberger BB 1, 340 f.); basis then * mēms-r-ā. A nasalless form * mēs-r- however is as for OIr. mīr `piece, bite' also possible and phonetically rather to be preferred (cf. Schwyzer 282). The phonetically reminding Slav. word, e.g. Russ. myazdrá `fleshy side of the skin' is both in meaning and in form difficult to connect, s. Vasmer s. v. The basis would have been a word for `flesh', IE * mēms(-o)- n. in Skt. māṃsá-, Goth. mimz etc.; besides with loss od the nasals (as in the word for `moon'; s. 2. μήν) IE * mēs- n. in Skt. mā́s-. -- (Not here μῆνιγξ (s. v.). -- Further forms in W.-Hofmann s. membrum; also WP. 2, 262 and Pok. 725. Etymology: Since Bopp as inherited identified with Skt. śāṇa- m. (MInd. ṇ for n?) `whet-stone, touchstone'; from a verb `whet, sharpen' in Skt. śí-śā-ti (IE. *ḱi-ḱō-ti) ; further with Lat. cō-s, cä-tus etc. (WP. 1, 454f., Pok. 542, W.-Hofmann s. catus). Schwyzer 458 however, considers "nicht ohne Grund", foreign origin. This is confirmed by the variation adduced by Fur. 121.

Etymology: The primary thematic μήδομαι, from which μήσασθαι (beside old μῆστο?, cf. Schwyzer 751) and μήσομαι, is generally identified with the synonymous μέδομαι (s. μέδω). The lengthened grade (- η- also Dor., so old) is remarkable, as the relevant longvowel presents (Schwyzer 685) further prob. all have full grade. One might consider therefore, to separate μήδομαι from μέδομαι and to connect the root mē- `measure' discussed under μῆτις and μέτρον (which might be cognate with med- `measure') assuming a (presentic?) δ-enlargement (cf. Schwyzer 702 f.). A cross of * mē- and * med- may also be considered. This has to be old, as the verbal noun μήδεα has an agreement in Arm. mit-k' pl. `id.'; s. Beekes, XXX

Etymology: By H. Petersson Studier tillegn. Esaias Tegner (Uppsala 1913) 226ff. (agreeing Güntert Weltkönig 50f.) as inherited word identified with Skt. mitrá- n. m. `friend', prop. `friendship', Av. miθ ra- m. `treaty, friend', as personification `Mithra' = OP. MiÞra-; orig. meaning *'connection', to IE * mei- `bind, attach' (WP. 2, 241 f., Pok. 710); here after P. also μίτος. The combination remains quite hypothetical, as long as nothing is known of an agreeing primary verb, esp. as the other adduced evidence, e.g. Skt. mékhalā `girdle', are very doubtful (cf. Schwyzer WuS 12, 32 n. 1). Other hypotheses on mitrá- in Mayrhofer KEWA s.v., who gives an extensive treatment. -- Given its technical meaning the in Greek isolated μίτρα (the semantically unclear μίτος can better be left out) can very well be a loan, perhaps from an Indo-Iranian source. Does the short -α point to a Pre-Greek word?
